From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, this is the story of a curmudgeonly teacher at a New England boarding school forced to remain on campus during a Christmas break in 1970, to babysit the handful of students unable to go home. Slowly he forms an unlikely kinship with Angus, a clever, wayward 15 year-old troublemaker, and with the school's head cook, Miss Lamb, who just lost her son in Vietnam.
The marooned three form an unlikely Christmas family, share comic misadventures and come to understand that they are not beholden to their past.
Nominated for 5 Oscars & 5 BAFTAs, winning Best Supporting Actress.
“2023’s best Christmas movie …a genial, gentle, redemptive dramedy … with funny, rueful dialogue and melancholy sense of place … wit, style, forthright and ingenious narrative invention” [ Guardian ]
“Beautifully bittersweet” Rotten Tomatoes: 92% Audience Score.
